GAUGE:

12 sc = 4 inches with size H hook. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

1-2-3 Easy Diagonal Shawl/Scarf Reviewed by Linda Scott on 2011-05-29 ***
The key to the pattern is as follows: when you make the fpdc you are crossing over two stitches. Skip one of those stitches and use the next stitch to begin the next set of five sc. I think this may solve the problems people are having with pattern.
