American Flag Throw

Lion Brand® Wool-Ease® Sportweight

GAUGE:

16 sc = 4 inches (10 cm) When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

NOTES:

To change colors within row, work to last st of old color, work last st until last 2 loops remain on hook, drop old color to WS; with new color, yo and draw through both loops on hook to complete st; continue with new color. For star rows, carry Royal Blue and Fisherman across field area only; work with Racing Red (or Fisherman) only on stripe area.

FLAG STRIP - make 3
With B, chain 40.

Row 1 Single crochet in 2nd chain from hook and in each remaining chain across - 39 sc. Ch 1, turn.

Row 2 Single crochet in each single crochet across. Ch 1, turn. * Continuing in rows of single crochet, work until there are 4 rows of B, then work 5 rows A, 4 rows B, 5 rows A.

Next row Work 24 single crochet with B; attach C and work remaining 15 single crochet (field area). Ch 1, turn.

Next row Work 1 single crochet with C; join A; work (1 single crochet A, 1 single crochet C) 7 times; work 24 single crochet B. Repeat last 2 rows once more. Continuing C and A on 15 field sts as before, work 5 rows A over last B stripe, then 4 rows B. This completes one flag. Work 15 rows A for band. Repeat from * until 5th flag is completed. Fasten off.

JOINING BANDS - make 2
With A, chain 12. Work in rows of 11 single crochet until same length as flag strips. Fasten off. With bands between flag strips, neatly sew bands to long edges of flag strips as shown to form center panel of throw.

INNER BORDER

Top and Bottom - make 2
With A, chain 9. work in rows of 8 single crochet until same length as across top or bottom of center panel. Fasten off. Sew in place.

Sides - make 2
In same manner, make a border to fit along each side edge of center panel, including ends of top and bottom borders. Sew in place. With A, crochet 1 round of single crochet around outer edge, working 3 single crochet in each corner.

OUTER BORDER

With C, crochet 7 rounds of single crochet around edge, working 3 single crochet at each corner on each round. Slip stitch in each single crochet around last round. Fasten off.
