Watch Cap

Lion Brand® Wool-Ease® Chunky

10 sts + 11 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in single crochet with larger hook.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Draw up a loop in each of next 2 sts, yo and draw through all 3 loops on hook.
Fpdc Yo, insert hook from front to back then to front, going around the dc post, draw up a loop, (yo and draw through 2 loops on hook) twice. Skip st behind the fpdc.
Bpdc Yo, insert hook from back to front then to back, going around the dc post, draw up a loop, (yo and draw through 2 loops on hook) twice. Skip st in front of the bpdc.

(NoteRibbing is worked after upper hat is completed.)

Beginning at the lower edge and above the ribbing, with larger hook, ch 55 (57). Foundation Row (RS) Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across - 54 (56) sts; turn. For body pattern Ch 1, sc in each sc across; turn. Work in body pattern to approximately 5½ (6) inches from beginning, ending with a WS row.

Row 7 Ch 1, (sc2tog) across ending sc in last sc - 14 (15) sts; turn.
Row 8Ch 1, sc in each sc across.

Leaving a tail measuring approximately 18 inches, fasten off. Thread tail into yarn needle and back through the back loops of the remaining 14 (15) sts. Pull up tightly to close opening. With the same tail, join sides.

With the RS facing and smaller hook, join yarn with a slip st in lower edge. Ch 3 (counts as dc), working along unused loops of Foundation, work 52 (54) more dc around. At end, skip last ch, join with a slip st in 3rd ch of beginning ch-3 - 53 (55) sts; turn.

Rnd 1

Ch 2, fpdc over next dc; (bpdc over next 2 dc, fpdc over next 2 dc) around, ending bpdc over next 2 dc, fpdc over last dc; join with a slip st in 2nd ch of beginning ch-2.

Watch Cap Reviewed by BARBARA HOFFMAN on 2014-09-28 *****
This hat turned out so cute and it is so warm and comfy.

When I first read the instructions, I could not visualize how it would go together because I have never made a hat that didn't start with a circle.

After reading the reviews about how easy it was, I went ahead and tried it.

I did not have the exact same yarn, but it was very easy to adjust the pattern. You can make it whatever size you want, really. I added the pom pom to make it more fun for my granddaughter. I also made a matching scarf.
