In single crochet (sc) with larger hook, 12 sts and 12 rows = 4 inches.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Cuff: Leaving a tail for sewing and using smaller hook, ch 8 (10, 12, 13). Working from side to side, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across - 7 (9, 11, 12) sts; turn. Ribbing Ch 1, sc in back lp of each sc across; turn. Rep 11 (15, 19, 23) more rows. On last row, change to larger hook, ch 1, DO NOT TURN.

Palm: Working across top of ribbing, sc 13 (17, 21, 25) evenly spaced across; turn. Next Row (WS) Ch 1, sc in each sc across and inc by working 2 sc in each of 3 (4, 6, 5) sts evenly spaced; turn - 16 (21,27,30) sts. Row 1 Ch 1, sc in each st; turn. Rep for 5 (9, 14, 16) more rows.

Top Shaping: For Child and Woman Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in each of next 7 (10) sts, sc2tog, sc in each of next 8 (11) sts, sc2tog - 18 (24) sts; turn. For All Sizes Ch 1, [sc2tog, sc in each of next 4 (5, 8, 11) sts, sc2tog] twice - 12 (14, 20, 26) sts; turn. Next Row Ch 1, sc in each sc across; turn. For Man Ch 1, (sc2tog, sc in each of next 9 sts, sc2tog) twice - 22 sts; turn. Ch 1, sc in each sc across; turn. For All Sizes Ch 1, sc2tog across; turn. Ch 1, sc in each rem 6 (7, 10, 11) sts. Leaving a tail measuring approx 10 inches long, cut yarn and fasten off. Thread tail into yarn needle and back through back lps of rem sts. Pull up tightly to close opening and leave tail for sewing.

Thumb With the RS facing and using larger hook, skip first sc row after ribbing. Join yarn with a slip st between 2nd and 3rd rows on side edge. Ch 1, sc in same row as joining and in each of next 3 (5, 6, 7) rows. Planning to leave last 2 rows free, on opposite side of mitten sc in 4 (6, 7, 8) rows - 8 (12, 14, 16) sts.

Rnd 1 Sc in 7 (11, 13, 15) sts, sc2tog.

Rnd 2 Sc in 6 (10, 12, 14) sts, sc2tog.

Work 1 (2, 4, 5) additional sc rnds on 6 (10, 12, 14) sts. For Child, Woman, and Man only Sc2tog around; then sc around on rem 5 (6, 7) sts. For All Sizes Cut yarn and fasten off leaving about a 6 inches tail. Thread tail into yarn needle and back through back lps of rem sts. Pull up tightly to close opening. Turn to inside. Pull down firmly on tail, then weave into fabric.

: Seam sides with tails. Hide ends.
