Note: Almost all of color Wood (C) is used in this project. If gauge varies considerably or wider edging is desired, additional yarn will be required BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
BASIC SQUARE: Ch 4, sl st in first ch to form a loop. Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in loop, (ch 3, 3 dc in loop) 3 times, end ch 3, sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch 3. Fasten off. Rnd 2: Attach yarn with sl st to ch-3 space, ch 3 (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same ch-3 space, *ch 1, (3 dc,ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-3 space; rep from * two more times, end ch 1, join with sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch 3. Fasten off. Rnd 3: Attach yarn with sl st to ch-3 space, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same ch-3 space, *ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 space, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-3 space; rep from * two more times, ch 1, 3 dc in ch-1 space, ch 1, join with sl st to 3rd ch of first ch 3. Fasten off. SQUARE 1 (make 10 for scarf;20 for shawl): Foll instructions for Basic Square, work colors as foll: Rnd 1: Color A. Rnd 2: Color B. Rnd 3: Color A. Rnd 4: Color C. SQUARE 2 (make 10 for scarf; 20 for shawl): Foll instructions for Basic Square, work colors as foll: Rnd 1: Color C. Rnd 2: Color A. Rnd 3: Color B. Rnd 4: Color A.
ASSEMBLY: Strips (make 1 of each for scarf; 2 of each for shawl): Sc tog 10 squares end to end to make a long, narrow strip in foll order: Strip 1: 1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2. Strip 2: 2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1. Place 2 strips next to each other to form scarf 10 squares long and 2 squares wide. Rep for shawl to have 10 squares long, 4 squares wide, alternating placement of strips. Sc or sew tog as desired. Trim outside edge with 1 row sc in C, working 3 sc in each corner. Weave in ends.
