8 sc = 4 inches. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Rolled Crochet Hat Reviewed by Frankie Harvey-Shea on 2009-01-14 *****
I used Homespun to make this hat. Two hats can be made from one skein. I added one extra increase row and three more rows, and then edged it using a crab stitch. (worked from left to right without turning hat. After slip stitch join last row, chain 1 and sl st in the next stitch to the right. ch 1, sl in next stitch to the right* repeat all the way around and join with a slip stitch. I then made a bow by ch 20 with a 6 inch tail at beginning of chain. Join to first ch with a sl st. ch 20, join to center where tail is with a sl st*. repeat 6 more times. leave 6" at end when cutting off. Poke ends thru different stitches on hat where you want the bow to be and tie a square knot on the inside.
