Granny Square Scarf

GAUGE:

Rnd 1 of Square 1 = 2 inches [5 cm] across.
Square 1 = 5" x 5" [12.5 x 12.5 cm].

BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

SQUARE 1 – Make 7

With B, ch 4; join with slip st to form ring.

Rnd 1 (RS) Ch 3, 2 dc in ring, ch 2, [3 dc, ch 2] 3 times in ring; join with slip st in top of beginning ch – 4 corner ch2-spaces. Fasten off B.

Rnd 2 With RS facing, join A in center dc of any 3dc-group, ch 1, *sc in center dc of 3dc-group, ch 1, skip next dc, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch2-space, ch 1, skip next dc; repeat from * around; join with slip st in first sc – 4 corner ch2-spaces.

Rnd 3 Slip st in first ch1-space, ch 1, *sc in ch1-space, ch 1, skip next dc, sc in next dc, ch 1, skip next dc, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next corner ch2-space, ch 1, skip next dc, sc in next dc, ch 1, skip next dc, sc in next ch1-space, ch 1; repeat from * around; join with slip st in first sc – 4 corner ch2-spaces; 5 ch1-spaces across each side. Fasten off A.

Rnd 4 With RS facing, join B in ch1-space to the right of any corner ch2-space, ch 1, *(sc, ch 2, sc) in ch1-space, ch 1, (sc, ch 4, sc) in next corner ch2-space, ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch1-space, sc in next ch1-space, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch1-space, sc in next ch1-space; repeat from * around; join with slip st in first sc – 4 corner ch4-loops; 3 ch2-spaces across each side. Fasten off B, leaving long tail for joining.

SQUARE 2 – Make 6

Rnds 1, 3, and 4 are worked same as Square 1. Rnd 2 With RS facing, join A in any ch2-space, ch 1, *sc in ch2-space, ch 1, skip next dc, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next dc, ch 1, skip next dc; repeat from * around; join with slip st in first sc – 4 corner ch2-spaces.

FINISHING

Alternating Squares 1 and 2, use tails to sew squares together in a strip, joining through ch2-spaces and running yarn through stitches between to hide. Fasten off and weave in ends.

FRINGE

Cut 12" [30.5 cm] lengths of B. Using 4 for each Fringe, knot 7 Fringes evenly spaced across short edges of Scarf. Trim.

Following the directions step by step makes for a very uneven pattern. Once I made a few squares I realized where I needed to correct. I also used the size H-8 hook that is recommended and my squares came out 2 inches too small, and I crochet loosely. I suggest using a MUCH larger hook if you want the correct gauge.
