GAUGE:

2 shells + 3 rows = 2 inches [5 cm] over Shell pattern (Rnds 8-10) BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

NOTES:

The shaping of this hat seems unusual but will ultimately make hat as photographed.

Rnds 1-5 and Rnd 11 are increase rnds. Shells made in Rnds 3-5 and Rnd 11 will not be perfectly staggered, in order to accommodate increases.

In Rnds 5-10, shells will always be made in sc of previous rnd and scs will always be in center dc of shell in previous rnd.

'Famous Designer' Hat Reviewed by Susan Harrison on 2008-08-03 ***
I used Lion Suede Fuchsia and Waterlilies, which are a happy combination. The suede yarn itself was kind of a pain to work with because it grabs itself, and it leaves a residue on the hands. I ended up adding a couple more rounds to get the size that seemed right. My tension may have been too tight in the beginning. I probably won't make another of these hats, but the end result looks good and should make a nice gift.
