Santa Claus Mittens

GAUGE:

14 sc + 13 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) with MC.

BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

sc2tog (sc dec) Insert hook into st and draw up a loop. Insert hook into next st and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook.

MITTENS

With MC, ch 25 (31). Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across – 24 (30) sts. Ch 1, turn. Work 1 (2) more row(s) sc.

THUMB GUSSET

Row 1 Ch 1, sc in first 11 (14) sc, (2 sc in next sc) twice, sc in remaining 11 (14) sc; turn – 26 (32) sts.

Row 2 Ch 1, sc in first 11 (14) sc, (2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc), sc in remaining 11 (14) sc; turn – 28 (34) sts.

Row 3 Ch 1, sc in first 11 (14) sc, (2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc), sc in remaining 11 (14) sc; turn – 30 (36) sts.

Row 4 Ch 1, sc in first 11 (14) sc, (2 sc in next sc, sc in next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc), sc in remaining 11 (14) sc; turn – 32 (38) sts.

Size Adult only Ch 1, sc in first 14 sc, (2 sc in next sc, sc in next 8 sc, 2 sc in next sc), sc in remaining 14 sc; turn – 40 sts.

Sizes Child and Adult Ch 1, sc in first 10 (13) sc, 2 sc in next sc, skip next 10 (12) sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in remaining 10 (13) sc – 24 (30) sts. Work back and forth in sc on these 24 (30) sts until there are a total of 16 (30) rows from beg.

MITTEN TIP

Row 1 (Sc in next 2 sc, sc2tog) across, ending sc2tog for Adult – 18 (22) sts.

Row 2 (Sc in next sc, sc2tog) across, ending sc for Adult – 12 (15) sts.

Row 3 Sc2tog across, ending sc for Adult – 6 (8) sts.

Row 4 Sc2tog across – 3 (4) sts.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing seam.

THUMB

Attach MC at thumb opening; sc across 10 (12) sts. Work 3 (5) more rows sc.

Dec Row 1 Sc2tog across – 5 (6) sts.

Dec Row 2 Sc2tog across, ending sc for Child – 3 (3) sts.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing seam.

CUFF

Attach CC at beg ch edge at wrist. Work 24 (30) dc across beg ch edge. Ch 3, turn. Work 7 more rows dc. Fasten off.

FINISHING

Sew thumb seam. Sew side seam. Turn cuff inwards at halfway point and sew down. Weave in ends.

This was the first time I've ever made mittens and I found this pattern to be both quick and easy to follow. My niece wore them for the local Christmas parade and LOVED them!
