GAUGE:

3½ sc = 1 inches using size H hook. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you less stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

To dec 1 sc (Insert hook in next st, yo, draw yarn through st) twice, yo, draw yarn through 3 loops on hook.

MITT

Cuff With size G hook, ch 5.
Row 1 Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (4 sc), turn.
Row 2 Working through back loops only, sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Rep Row 2 until cuff meas 9½ inches unstretched. Join both ends into a ring with sl st. Change to size H hook.
Palm: Row 1 Ch 1, work 34 sc evenly spaced across long edge of cuff, join with sl st in first st. (Note Work ch 1 at beg of each rnd and end sl st to beg ch-1 at end of each rnd.) Cont in sc for 4½ inches.
Thumb opening: Next rnd Work 25 sc, ch 8, skip 8 sc, 1 sc in last sc. Cont to work even in sc including 1 sc in each of 8 ch for 9 inches (34 sc).
First Dec Rnd * Dec 1 sc, sc in next sc *, rep from * to * around, sc in last sc (23 sc). Work 1 rnd even. Second Dec Rnd * Dec 1 sc, sc in next sc *, rep from * to * around, end sc in last 2 sc (16 sc).
Third Dec Rnd (Dec 1 sc in each of next 2 sc) 8 times (8 sts rem). Cut yarn leaving a long tail. With tapestry needle, draw end of yarn length through top of each st, pull tight. Turn to inside and fasten off.
Thumb With size H hook, join yarn in corner st, ch 1, work 16 sc around thumb opening. Work in sc in spiral fashion until thumb meas 3 inches. Cut yarn leaving a sewing length and close thumb in same manner as top of mitt.
