3½ sc = 1 inches using size H hook.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

To dec 1 sc (Insert hook in next st, yo, draw yarn through st) twice, yo, draw yarn through 3 loops on hook.

Cuff With size G hook, ch 5.
Row 1 Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (4 sc), turn.<b >
Row 2 Working through back loops only, sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Rep Row 2 until cuff meas 9½ inches unstretched. Join both ends into a ring with sl st. Change to size H hook.
<b >Palm: Row 1 Ch 1, work 34 sc evenly spaced across long edge of cuff, join with sl st in first st. (Note Work ch 1 at beg of each rnd and end sl st to beg ch-1 at end of each rnd.) Cont in sc for 4½ inches.
<b >Thumb opening: Next rnd Work 25 sc, ch 8, skip 8 sc, 1 sc in last sc. Cont to work even in sc including 1 sc in each of 8 ch for 9 inches (34 sc).
<b >First Dec Rnd * Dec 1 sc, sc in next sc *, rep from * to * around, sc in last sc (23 sc). Work 1 rnd even. Second Dec Rnd * Dec 1 sc, sc in next sc *, rep from * to * around, end sc in last 2 sc (16 sc).
<b >Third Dec Rnd (Dec 1 sc in each of next 2 sc) 8 times (8 sts rem). Cut yarn leaving a long tail. With tapestry needle, draw end of yarn length through top of each st, pull tight. Turn to inside and fasten off.
<b >ThumbWith size H hook, join yarn in corner st, ch 1, work 16 sc around thumb opening. Work in sc in spiral fashion until thumb meas 3 inches. Cut yarn leaving a sewing length and close thumb in same manner as top of mitt.
