GAUGE:

7 stitches + 8 rows = 4 inches [10 cm] in single crochet. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Chain 15. Single crochet in 2^nd chain from hook and in each chain across – 14 stitches. Chain 1, turn. Work even in single crochet until there are a total of 13 rows. Fasten off.

Back and Flap

Work same as Front, working even in single crochet, until there are a total of 14 rows.

Decrease Row Insert hook into first stitch, pull up a loop, insert hook into next stitch, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on hook – single crochet 2 together made; single crochet in each stitch to last 2 stitches, single crochet 2 together.

Repeat Decrease Row until 2 stitches remain. Single crochet 2 together.

Fasten off.

FINISHING

Place Front and Back with wrong sides together, matching rows and beginning chain edge. Slip stitch bottom edge together. Sew side edges of Front and Back together with an overcast stitch.

Flap Edging

With right sides facing, attach yarn to base of Flap. Single crochet into side of this row, 2 single crochet in side of first Decrease Row, single crochet evenly along edge of flap to center stitch, 3 single crochet in this stitch, single crochet evenly along other edge of Flap, 2 single crochet in first Decrease Row, single crochet in side of last row.

Fasten off.

Cut 3 strands, 48 inches [122 cm] long each, knot tog at one end. Braid and knot at other end, adjusting to desired length of shoulder strap as necessary. Sew braid to side seams from bottom to top of Bag for shoulder strap.

Fold Flap over front of Bag. Mark snap closure placement on Flap.

Tassel

Cut strands of leftover yarn, 1 each 24 inches [61 cm] and 54 inches [137 cm] long and cut remaining yarn into strands twice the length you want Tassel to be and lay these strands together on a flat surface. Fold 24 inches [61 cm] strand in half and place over the middle of these, fold them over it, and tie long strand to form top of Tassel. Fold 54 inches [137 cm] strand in half, tie around Tassel about 1½" [4 cm] down from top knot, tie, and wrap around Tassel, hiding ends in center of Tassel. Trim ends and sew Tassel on top of Flap. Sew snap on Flap on underside under Tassel; sew other side of snap on front of Bag to correspond.
