GAUGE:

10 sts = 3 inches (7.5 cm) in single crochet When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Christmas Tree Christmas Stocking Reviewed by Stephanie on 2013-12-10 ****
I've made this pattern 4 times now. The stocking turns out very cute and it's not a difficult project. I do think there are some issues with the way it is written, more specifically having to do with the heel. I think it could be written a little more clearly and I think there is an extra stitch referenced in row 3 of the heel. It says "SC in next 7 sts", but there are only 6. Maybe I'm doing something wrong or just not understanding the pattern correctly. Anyway, I just add an extra SC in the last stitch of the row and then I'm back on track. Other than the heel I don't have any other problems with the way the pattern is written.
