GAUGE:
10 single crochet = 4 inches (10 cm). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
NOTES:
Slip stitch last single crochet of each round to the first and chain 1. Do not turn. Mark first stitch of each round with stitch marker, safety pin, or strand of contrasting yarn. Move marker at beginning of each round.

POMPOM
Cut a piece of cardboard 2½" x 3 inches. Wrap the yarn around the 2½" width; the more times you wrap, the fuller your pompom will be. Cut yarn, leaving an 18 inches end. Slide pompom off cardboard carefully and wrap end around middle, securing it lightly. Clip through loops on both ends. Sew pompom to top of hat.
I had to pull my first attempt apart because it didn't look like the finished product AT ALL! I worked a row of even single crochets in between each increase row, and the divided the length from center in half to know how much longer it was recommended to be. It was for a child, so I didn't want it too long. For an adult I would try how 2 even rows in between each increase row would look. Also use a lighter yarn to give it that droopy look.
