8 sc = 4 in. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Bobble: Work 3 tr into next st leaving last loop of each st on hook, yo and pull loop through all 4 loops on hook (tr will bend to right side to form bobble when next sc is made).

Rows 1-5: Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn.
Row 6
(WS): Sc in each of next 2 sts, bobble in next st, *sc in each of next 5 sts, bobble in next st*, rep from * to * across, end sc in each of last 2 sts. Ch 1, turn.
Rows 7-11: Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn.
Row 12:
Sc in each of next 5 sts, *bobble in next st, sc in each of next 5 sts*, rep from * to * across.
Rep Rows 1-12 for pat st.

Ch 54.
Foundation Row: Sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across (53 sc). Ch 1, turn. Work in pat st starting with Row 2 until blanket measures 27 in. square or desired measurement, end with pat Row 5 or 11. Work 1 row sc around entire blanket, working 3 sc in each corner. Fasten off.

Ch 27.
Foundation row: Sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across (26 sc). Ch 1, turn.
Next row: Work 1 sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn.

Next row: Dc in each of next 2 sts, *bobble in next st, sc in each of next 3 sts*, rep from * to * across. Ch 1, turn.
Dec row: Dec 1 sc (draw up loop in each of next 2 sc, yo, draw yarn through all loops on hook), sc in each st to end of row. Ch 1, turn. Rep dec row every row until 3 sc rem. Work 3 sc tog and fasten off. Turn up bottom edge at turning ridge and work 1 row sc around two sides of hood.
