GAUGE:

12 sts + 15 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in sc. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

BACKPACK
Ch 28, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across.
Row 1 Ch 1, skip 1 st, sc across. Repeat last row 4 times more.
Eyelet Row Ch 2, skip 1 st, dc in next 2 sts, (ch 1, skip 1 st, dc in next 3 sts) across.
Rep Row 1 until piece measures 12 inches from beg. Repeat Eyelet row. Work 6 rows sc. Fasten off. Make second piece to match.

Strap
With 2 strands held together, make a chain 80" long. Fasten off.

Finishing
Sew backpack pieces together at sides and bottom. Tie an overhand knot in the center of the strap. At the top of the bag with front facing, place knot at center and weave strap in and out of bag, beginning at the hole to the left of center, and ending at hole halfway around on the back side. Repeat with other end of strap on right side.

Tie an overhand knot 8" from the end of each strap. With front of bag facing and left strap, working thought both layers, go in leftmost hole from back to front, weave in and out towards center. Repeat with right strap. Tie ends in a square knot at center front.

Backpack Reviewed by Stefanie on 2008-05-07 ****
I thought the assembly was tricky at first to figure out which way the backpack went, but it took about 5 minutes of thinking to get the assembly right. The weaving instructions were clear and the pattern was very very easy. However, the strap is too stretchy as a chain stitch and should be more like a cord described in the newest backpack pattern.
