11 sts = 4.25 inches; 12 rows = 4 inches on size J hook. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Double Stitch:
Row 1:
Insert hook into 2nd ch from hook, draw loop through, insert hook into next ch, draw loop through, yarn over hook, draw through all 3 loops on hook, *insert hook into same ch as previous st, draw loop through, insert hook into next ch, draw loop through, yarn over hook, draw through all 3 loops on hook*; rep from * to * across, 1 sc in last ch. Turn.
Row 2: Ch 1. Insert hook into first st, draw loop through, insert hook into next st, draw loop through, yarn over hook, draw through all 3 loops on hook, *insert hook into same st as previous st, draw loop through, insert hook into next st, draw loop through, yarn over hook, draw through all 3 loops on hook*; rep from * to * across, 1 sc in last st. Turn. Rep Row 2 for Double St Pat.

Half double crochet rib (worked over any number of sts on flat pieces, even number of sts in-the-rnd. If worked flat, at end of each row, turn, then ch 2. If worked in-the-rnd, sl st end to beg of rnd, ch 2, do not turn.)
Row 1: Work 1 hdc in each st across.
Row 2: *Work 1 hdc around front of post of next st, 1 hdc around back of post of next st*; rep from * to * across.
Row 3: Work same as Row 2, matching alternating sts to pat formed by Row 2. NOTE: To inc on RS row, work sc into first st of row, then work st again in pat; on last st of RS row, following pat, work 1 sc into turning ch.

Shape neck: Work 11 (14, 16) sts, skip next 11 (13, 15) sts, attach another ball of yarn and work rem 11 (14, 16) sts. Working both sides at the same time, dec 1 st at each neck edge on next row. Work even until front meas 11 (13, 16) in. from beg.

Start BACK ext row: Work across 10 (13, 15) sts, loosely ch 13 (15, 17) for neck area, work across rem 10 (13, 15) sts. Work even in pat st until back meas same as front to bottom inc shaping. Dec  1 st at each end of every RS row 4 (5, 5) times. Do not fasten off.

Ch 16 (18, 21). Work in pat on 15 (17, 21) sts for 15 (17, 19)". Fasten off.

Baby Poncho Reviewed by Donna Bennett on 2015-01-06 ****
I made this for our grandson a few years ago and now I'm making another for a relative who is expecting in the spring. There is a correction that needs to be made, I think. In the NOTES section where it says at the end that there will be 2 more sts. I believe that should be 4 more sts (if you're making 2 at the beginning of the row and making 2 at the end of the row - that's 4. I do love this pattern, but I think it might be more of an intermediate level (I do consider myself to be advanced beginner and find it tricky in spots) :)
