Pinwheel Lace Cardigan

GAUGE:

For size Small: 4 inches x 4 inches, worked with size I hook.
For size Medium: 4½ inches x 4½ inches, worked with size J hook.
For size Large: 5 inches x 5 inches, worked with size K hook.
BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

4 dc cluster: Work 1 dc in each of next 4 dc until 1 lp of each dc rems on hook, yo and draw through all 5 lps on hook.

NOTES:

The same instructions apply to all sizes, except you use a different size hook depending on the size garment you are making.

FULL SQUARE (make 65):
With size I (J, k) hook, ch 6, sl st in first ch to form ring. Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), work 15 dc in ring, sl st into top of beg ch -- 16 dc.
Rnd 2: Ch 3, 1 dc in each of next 3 dc, (ch 5, 1 dc in each of next 4 dc) 3 times, ch 5, sl st to top of beg ch.
Rnd 3: Ch 3, 1 dc into each of next 3 dc until 1 lp of each dc rems on hook, yo and draw through all 4 lps on hook (1 cluster made at beg of rnd), ch 5, sk 2 ch, (1 dc, ch 5, 1 dc) into next ch, ch 5, *4 dc cluster over next 4 dc, ch 5, sk 2 ch, (1 dc, ch 5, 1 dc) into next ch, ch 5; rep from * twice more, sl st into top of first cluster.
Rnd 4: Ch 1, *1 sc into top of cluster, 5 sc in the ch-5 space, 1 sc in next dc, 5 sc into next ch-5 space, 1 sc into next dc, 5 sc into next ch-5 space; rep from * 3 times more, sl st to first sc. Fasten off.

Half Square (make 14):
With size I (J, K) hook, ch 4, sl st in first ch to form ring. Row 1: Ch 3, work 7 dc in ring (8 dc), turn.
Row 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in 2nd dc, ch 5, 1 dc in each of next 4 sts, ch 5, 1 dc in next dc, 1 dc in top of t-ch, turn.
Row 3: Ch 3, 1 dc in 2nd dc, *ch 5, sk 2 ch, (1 dc, ch 5, 1 dc) in next ch, ch 5, sk 2 ch, 4 dc cluster; rep from * once, end working last 2 dc tog, turn.
Row 4: Ch 1, 1 sc in each ch and st across, end sc in last dc; continuing around work 12 sc evenly spaced along rem edge, end 1 sc in corner. Fasten off.

Quarter Square (make 12):
With size I (J, K) hook, ch 19.
Row 1: 1 dc in 9th ch from hook, ch 5, sk 2 ch, 4 dc cluster, ch 5, sk 2 ch, (1 dc, ch 5, 1 dc) in next ch, turn.
Row 2: Ch 1, 1 sc in first dc, 5 sc in the ch-5 space, 1 sc in next dc, 5 sc in next ch-5 space, 1 sc in top of cluster, 5 sc in next ch-5 space, 1 sc in next dc, 5 sc in next ch-space, 3 sc in corner, 12 sc evenly spaced along rem edge, end 1 sc in corner. Fasten off.

Right Wedge (make 12):
With size I (J, K) hook, ch 21 (3 ch = 1 dc; 3 ch = ch-3 space): Row 1: 1 dc in 10th ch from hook, (ch 2, sk 2 ch, 1 hdc in next ch) 2 times, ch 2, sk 2 ch, 1 sc in next ch, ch 1, sk 1 ch, sl st in last ch. Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sl st in first st, 1 sc in each ch and in each st, end sl st in beg sl st.

Left Front Wedge (make 12):
Row 1: Work as for Right Front Wedge Row 1.
Row 2: Ch 1, DO NOT TURN, work as for Right Front Wedge Row 2.

FINISHING:
Back:
Assemble Squares 5 across x 5 high and sew tog invisibly.
Fronts and Sleeves: Foll assembly diagram. Sew Fronts to Back at shoulders.
Cuff: With RS facing, join yarn with sl st at wrist edge and with size H (I, J) hook, work 4 rows sc. Fasten off. Place markers on Front and Back at side edges 12" down from shoulder seam. Sew Sleeves between markers. Sew side and Sleeve seams.
Lower Edge: With RS facing, join yarn with sl st at center Front and with size H(I, J) hook, work in sc for 2". Fasten off.
Front and Neck Edge: With RS facing, join with a sl st at center Front lower edge and work as for Back for 1".
