Decorative Yarn Birthday Cake
Lion Brand® Homespun® Baby - Babysoft®
GAUGE: Gauge is not important to this project
BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

BIRTHDAY CAKE 1 Arrange the doilies on the plate so that they cover the entire plate. Apply a small drop of glue beneath each one to gently hold the doilies in place. 2 Remove paper labels from 1 skein each of Pink Carnation, Soft Violet, Sunshine, Soft Lime, and 3 skeins of Snow White Homespun Baby yarn. You will be using 6 skeins to form a ring, and the 7th one will form the center of the cake. Start with a Snow White skein, and using the floral pins, join to a Soft Lime, another Snow White, Soft Violet, Snow White, and Pink Carnation. Bring first Snow White around and join to the Pink Carnation to form a ring. Place on center of plate and insert the Sunshine skein in the center, securing with floral pins. 3 Remove paper labels from remaining skeins of Homespun Baby. Roll each skein into a firm, not tight, ball. Arrange these balls around the ring of standing skeins, alternating colors. Secure these balls together with the floral pins. They can also be secured to the standing skeins' center with additional pins. 4 Yarn daisies are used to decorate the cake and cover any spaces between the yarn skeins and balls. Using Babysoft, make 8 Pastel Violet, 7 Pastel Pink, and 7 Pastel Blue daisies; all with Pastel Yellow centers. Cut a 2˝ inches x 4 inches [6.5 x 10 cm] piece of cardboard. For each flower, wrap yarn around the 2˝ inches [6.5 cm] width of the cardboard 75 times. Carefully slip yarn off cardboard and tie another piece of yarn tightly around the center of the yarn bundle. Cut loops open and trim to a round shape. For each center, wrap yarn around 2 fingers 25 times. Carefully slip yarn off of fingers and tie another piece of yarn tightly around the center of the yarn bundle. Trim as above. Glue centers to each flower. Arrange flowers all around “layers inches of cake. They can be secured with floral pins as well.NOTE Yarn Birthday Cake is for display purposes only and is not intended as a toy; floral pins are sharp.

I modified this pattern quite a bit, but all the credit for my aunt's adorable birthday gift comes from here.
My aunt has been knitting for years, but mentioned she'd like to try a granny square afghan pattern she'd seen in a crochet book of mine. Rather than get her a learn to crochet book and hooks, I assembled enough Vanna's Choice for her to make the afghan into a cute cake.
I left the color meant for the edge of the afghan as skeins in the middle, then wound each of the colors into two balls and stacked them around to form the cake, securing them with bamboo skewers. I made flowers to fill in the gaps, and also kept a snippit of each color attached to the corresponding labels for reference. Then I added crochet hooks at the top as candles.
I thought this was a cute way to present yarn as a gift, and am very pleased with how it turned out. I will be putting a picture of it in my finished projects book :D
