Town and Country Capelet

Lion Brand® Homespun®

8 hdc + 7 rows = 4 inches [10 cm] on larger hook. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Capelet is worked from neck to lower edge.

Editor’s Note: When creating fringe using Homespun please note that because of the texture of the yarn the fringe will fray when cut. If you prefer a non-frayed look you can knot the ends, knit or crochet a fringe, or use hairspray or fray check.

With larger hook, ch 46; join with slip st to form ring, being careful not to twist ch.

Rnd 1 Ch 1, hdc in each ch around – 46 sts. Do not join, but mark end of rnd by placing contrasting thread between the last and first sts. Do not turn.

Rnd 2 Hdc in first st, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in each of next 4 sts; repeat from * around – 55 sts.

Rnd 3 and all odd rnds Hdc in each st around.

Rnd 4 Hdc in first st, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in each of next 5 sts; repeat from * around – 64 sts.

Rnd 6 Hdc in first st, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in each of next 6 sts; repeat from * around – 73 sts.

Rnd 8 Hdc in first st, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in each of next 7 sts; repeat from * around – 82 sts.

Rnd 10 Hdc in first st, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in each of next 8 sts; repeat from * around – 91 sts.

Rnd 12 Hdc in first st, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in each of next 9 sts; repeat from * around – 100 sts.

Rnd 14 Hdc in first st, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in each of next 10 sts; repeat from * around – 109 sts.

Rnds 15-34 Hdc in each st around. After Rnd 34, join with slip st.

Both sizes

Fringe (Ch 10, slip st in next hdc) around. Join with slip st. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

With smaller hook, ch 43.

Row 1 Dc in 5th ch from hook, *ch 1, skip next ch, (dc, ch 1, dc) in next ch (V-stitch made); repeat from * across – 20 V-stitches. Turn.

Row 2 Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 5 dc first in ch-1 space, *sc in next ch-1 space, 6 dc in next ch-1 space (shell made); repeat from * across – 20 shells. Fasten off, leaving long tail.

Thread needle with strand of yarn and weave down through last st to base of Rosette. Starting at that end, roll first shell tightly to form center bud; anchor at base of shell with 2 sts. Roll remaining strip to form Rosette, then secure by stitching in and out through layers of foundation ch at bottom of Rosette. Sew to front of Capelet.

Town and Country Capelet Reviewed by Paula Womack on 2015-02-18 *****
I have made this several times and love the outcome every time. I agree the first row is pretty hard for those of us with bifocals. I take a length of #10 cotton thread and work it to the right and left over the back stitch. When working row 2 just take the thread out. This insures a clean beginning.
