Lion Brand® Homespun®
4.75 stitches + 4 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) using 2 strands of yarn held together. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size
specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be
sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what
the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person.
If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller
size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Making a Gauge Swatch
Entire Afghan is worked with 2 strands of yarn held together.
Editor’s Note: When creating fringe using Homespun please note that because of the texture of the yarn the fringe will fray when cut. If you prefer a non-frayed look you can knot the ends,
crochet a fringe, or use hairspray or fray check.
With 2 strands of yarn held together, chain 52.
Foundation Row Single crochet in 2nd chain from hook, single crochet in each chain across – 51 single crochets. Chain 1, turn.
Row 1 Single crochet in back loop of each single crochet across – 51 single crochets. Chain 1, turn.
Rows 2-57 Repeat Row 1. Do not cut yarn at end of Row 57.
Note Border stitches are worked through both loops or entire stitch of previous row).
Chain 4, turn. Work double crochet in first corner stitch, double crochet in each single crochet across to next corner, (2 double crochet, chain 1, 2 double crochet) in corner stitch, double crochet in each row-end stitch to next corner, (2 double crochet, chain 1, 2 double crochet) in corner stitch, double crochet in each single crochet across to next corner, (2 double crochet, chain 1, 2 double crochet) in corner stitch, double crochet in each row-end stitch to first corner, double crochet in corner stitch, join with slip stitch to beginning chain. Cut yarn, leaving several inches to be worked with Tassel in corner.
Cut 4 strands of yarn 36 inches long and 4 strands 18 inches long.
Cut remaining yarn into 18 inch lengths. Divide into four equal groups. Fold one of the 36 inch strands in half and lay it flat on table, placing 1 of the four groups over center of doubled strand and using that to carefully tie group tightly together in the middle with a double knot. Hold ends of the doubled strand so knot becomes top of Tassel and grouped strands fall into place below it. Take an 18 inches piece of yarn and wrap tightly around Tassel 1½" below top knot to form Tassel neck. Knot securely; thread ends onto needle and weave ends to center of Tassel. Trim Tassel ends evenly.
Fasten 1 Tassel in chain-1 space in each corner of Afghan.
