GAUGE:

13.3 sts + 8 rows = 4" (10 cm) in single crochet BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

NOTES:

Row 1 establishes RS. Row 2 establishes pattern. To beg new color, fasten off last color used and with RS facing. draw up a loop in 1st s(, ch I, and sc in same st. When working in mds, always join last st to 1 st with a slip st.

Scarf & Hat Reviewed by Cathie Jeffreys on 2010-01-10 *
Halfway through the pattern for the hat I was very confused. I am an accomplished crocheter and have never before seen a pattern that I couldn't figure out or adjust to make work. I had to give up and look for another hat that my daughter liked.
