Scarf & Hat

GAUGE:

13.3 sts + 8 rows = 4" (10 cm) in single crochet BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

NOTES:

Row 1 establishes RS. Row 2 establishes pattern. To beg new color, fasten off last color used and with RS facing. draw up a loop in 1st s(, ch I, and sc in same st. When working in mds, always join last st to 1 st with a slip st.

STRIPE PATTERN
8 rows MC; 4 rows CC; 38 rows MC; 4 rows CC; 38 rows MC; 4 rows CC; 8 rows MC

SCARF

Beg Stripe Pattern with MC, ch 18. Row 1 Sc in 2" ch from hook, *ch 1, skip 1 ch, sc in next ch; rep from * across -9 sc. Row 2 Ch 1, turn. Working in back loops only, sc in 1st s(, *ch I, skip next ch l-space, sc in next sc; rep from * across. Row 3-104 Cont in Stripe Pattern 6, rep Row 2.

BORDER
With RS facing and CC, draw up a loop in left corner ch (17" ch of foundation ch).
Rnd 1
Ch 3, slip st in same ch. **Working in ends of rows across length of scarf, *ch 3, skip 1 row, slip st in next row; rep from * across, end with ch 3, skip last row, (slip st, ch 3, slip st) in end st Working across end, working in both loops of sts, (ch 2, skip next ch-space, slip st in next sc) 7 times. Ch 2, skip last ch l-space**, (slip st. ch 3, slip st) in last sc. Rep from ** to **, end with slip st in same ch as beg. Fasten off. Weave in and sew down ends on WS.

HAT
With MC, beg as for Scarf. Work 46 rows of Stripe Pattern. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing seam. With RS facing. sew tog with whip stitch through beg-ch and sts of last row. With MC, draw up a loop in back seam. Ch I, work top as follows:
Rnd 1
Sc in seam, *ch I, skip 1 row, sc in end of next row; rep from * around, end with ch I, join to beg sc -23 sc.
Rnd 2
Slip st to next ch l, space, ch 1, sc in same space, *ch 1, skip next s(, sc in next chl-space; rep from * around, end with ch 1, skip last sc, join to beg sc.
Rnd 3 Rep Rnd 2.
Rnd 4 Ch I, *dec 1 (work sc and next ch 1, space tog), sc in next sc, dec 1 (work next ch1, space and sc tog), sc in next ch1, space; rep from * around, end with dec 1, skip next s(, sc in last ch I-space, join to beg sc -30 sc.
Rnd 5 *Ch I, skip next s(, sc in next sc; rep from * around, end with ch 1, join to beg sc.
Rnd 6 Rep Rnd 2.
Rnd 7 Rep Rnd 4, end with dec 1 (through last sc and last chl-space), join to beg sc -20 sc.
Rnd 8
Rep Rnd 5. Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Weave tail under and over ch l-space of last md and pull to tighten. Tie off end on inside.

Bottom Edging
With CC, draw up a loop in back seam.
Rnd 1 Ch 1, sc in seam and in end of each row around, join to beg sc -47 sc.
Rnd 2-6 Ch 1, sc in each sc around, join to beg sc.
Rnd 7 *Ch 2, slip st in next sc; rep from * around, end with ch 2, slip st to joining slip st of previous md. Fasten off.

Weave in and sew down ends on WS. Turn Rnds 3-7 up around edge to form cuff.

I have crocheted for many many years and I have never read a pattern that was as hard to follow as this. Would NOT be able to make this pattern as it is written. It is too confusing for an advanced crocheter to figure out. I would like to crochet it as it looks nice.
