GAUGE:

10 sts = 4" on size K hook. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Pom-pom Hat Reviewed by boobies johnson on 2010-01-08 ****
So I used fisherman's wool and increased 2 extra rows. That way it would wear over my curly hair without smushing it too much.

I hated doing that much work in single crochet though, next time I'll just use a double crochet pattern and add the ear-flaps.
