Blue Sky Pocketbook Scarf

Lion Brand® Homespun® - Fancy Fur

10 sts + 11 rows = 4 inches [10 cm] in Scarf pattern with MC and smaller size hook. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Row 1 (RS) With MC and smaller size hook, ch 14. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn – 13 sts.

Rows 2-4 Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.

Row 5 Ch 1, sc in first 9 sc, ch 5, moving backwards, skip sc at base of ch, skip next 3 sc, slip st in next sc, slip st in 5 chs, slip st in sc at base of ch, moving forward, sc in last 4 sc, turn.

Row 6 Ch 1, sc in first 2 sc, ch 9, sc in last 2 sc, turn.

Row 7 Ch 1, sc in first 2 sc, sc in 9 chs, sc in last 2 sc, turn.

Rows 8-19 Repeat Row 2 for 12 times, turn.

Row 20 (fold line) Ch 1, sc in first sc, sc through front loop only in next 11 sc, sc both loops in last sc, turn.

Rows 21-38 Repeat Row 2 for 18 times, turn.

Row 39 (RS) Fold Pocketbook in half at fold line with WS tog. Ch 1, matching sts, sc through both thicknesses 13 times, turn.

Row 2 Ch 1, skip first sc, [sc in next ch-1 space, ch 1] across, sc in last sc, turn.

Repeat Row 2 until Scarf section is 45" [114.5 cm] long, slightly stretched, ending with a RS row.

Next Row (WS) Ch 1, sc in first sc, [sc in next ch-1 space, sc in next sc] across, turn – 13 sts.

Row 1 (RS) Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.

Rows 2-38 Work same as Pocketbook 1, Rows 2-38, turn.

Row 39 (RS) Fold Pocketbook in half at fold line with WS tog (check that the slit openings of both Pocketbooks face the same side) match sc of last row with sc stems of Row 1, and slip st tog: [insert hook in sc of last row, insert hook around front post (stem) of Row 1, slip st tog] 13 times across. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

With CC and smaller hook, join with slip st in bottom corner of 1 Pocketbook, ch 1, 3 sc in same st, *ch 1, skip first spare loop of fold line (Row 20), [sc in next spare loop, skip next spare loop] across, 3 sc in corner. Rotate and close side of Pocketbook: skip first row end, [ch 1, sc in next row end through both thicknesses, skip 1 row end] across to Scarf section. Change to larger hook. [Sc in next row end, ch 1, skip next row end] across to other Pocketbook. Blue Sky Pocketbook Scarf Reviewed by Carrie Bulgier on 2009-02-09 ***
I've made several of these scarves; it is a little difficult, but I just take my time & they always turn out nice. I like to add a large (1" or so) button to the pocket-the loop that is made on the upper part of the pocket is the perfect size for a large button & it looks really cute.
