10 sts = 4 inches [10 cm]; 8 rows = 5 inches [13 cm] in pattern. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Openwork Afghan Reviewed by kris on 2015-09-15 ****
I made this afghan in 'Waterfall' and it's gorgeous. You have to be a bit careful working with Homespun because it's kind of knobby and sometimes difficult to see the chains, but you can feel around for them and find them easily enough. It has been washed (on gentle) and has held up very well. I'm about to make another one in 'Clouds' for a bridal shower gift.
