GAUGE:

12 sc + 12 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) with larger hook. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Family of Mittens Reviewed by S.M. Randall-Friday on 2009-02-09 ***
I am very experienced at readin patterns, because I have been crocheting for 42 years, but I also had a bit of a problem with the thumb instructions. When writing these patterns, one must take the interpretation into consideration.

I also made a couple of pairs of these mittens for my grandchildren; however, I was not that happy with the end results. The basic pattern was brilliant. It is the thumb part that I do not like. It sticks straight out, rather than at the normal angle of a thumb. I will be looking for a differnet pattern in future.
