GAUGE:

11 sc + 12 rows = 4 inches [10 cm].
14 sts + 4 ridges = 4 inches [10 cm] in rib pattern. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

sc2tog (sc dec) Insert hook into st and draw up a loop. Insert hook into next st and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook.

MITTENS

Cuff Ribbing

With A, ch 11.

Row 1 Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across; turn – 10 sts.

Row 2 Ch 1, sc through the back loop in each sc across; turn.

Repeat Row 2 until piece measures 7½ (9)" [19 (23) cm], slightly stretched.

Slip st short ends together to form Cuff; do not fasten off. Reverse Cuff so seam is on inside.

BODY

Rnd 1 Ch 1, working in sides of rib rows, work 20 (25) sc evenly spaced around; join with slip st in first sc.

Rnd 2 Ch 1, sc in each sc around, do not join.

Continue to work in rnds of sc, working in a spiral, marking first st of each rnd, moving marker up as work progresses, until Mitten measures 4 (4½) inches [10 (11.5) cm] from beginning.

Thumb Opening

Next Rnd Remove marker and ch 4 (5), skip first 4 (5) sc, sc in next sc and in remaining sc around – 20 (25) sts.

Next Rnd Replacing marker in first st, sc in each ch and sc around – 20 (25) sc.

Hand

Continue to work in a spiral until Mitten measures 9 (10) inches [23 (25.5) cm] from beginning.

SHAPE TIP

Dec Rnd 1 *Sc in each of next 3 sc, sc2tog in next 2 sts; repeat from * around – 16 (20) sts.

Dec Rnd 2 *Sc in each of next 2 sc, sc2tog in next 2 sts; repeat from * around – 12 (15) sts.

Man's Size only Work 1 rnd even in sc.

Dec Rnd 3 *Sc in next sc, sc2tog in next 2 sts; repeat from * around – 8 (10) sts.

Dec Rnd 4 *Sc2tog in next 2 sts; repeat from * around – 4 (5) sts.

Fasten off, leaving a 24 inches [61 cm] tail. Using large-eyed, blunt needle, thread tail through remaining sts; pull tightly and secure.

THUMB

Join A to any st in Thumb Opening and work 10 (12) sc around. Continue to work in spiral until Thumb measures 3 (3½) inches [7.5 (9) cm] or desired length. Using large-eyed, blunt needle, thread tail through remaining sts; pull tightly and secure.

HEART TRIM

With B, make chain approximately 7½ (8) inches [19 (20.5) cm] long; sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Fasten off. Position trim in the shape of a heart on back of Mitten and sew in place.

TWISTED CORD

Cut 2 strands of B, each 8 (9) yards [7.5 (8.25) m] long; fold in half. Secure folded ends around door knob. Twist other end until taut and yarn begins to kink. Release end from door knob. Bring ends together and let cord twist on itself, smoothing to even the twist. Knot ends. Attach ends to inside cuff seam of each Mitten.
