GAUGE:

10 sts and 10 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in single crochet with K hook
10 sts and 6.5 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in double crochet with K hook BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you less stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Americana Hat & Scarf Reviewed by sandy freeman on 2008-03-01 *****
I made this for my Grand daughter a few years ago, she loved it then and still does. I hated making the stars, but, they turned out really good. I have used this hat pattern in lots of other colors for her, added pom pom on top, really cute. Sandy Freeman
