GAUGE:
10 sts + 10 rows = 4" (10 cm) in single crochet with K hook
10 sts + 6.5 rows = 4" (10 cm) in double crochet with K hook. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

I "sewed" the stars on by using a long piece of blue yarn, and weaving it in and out across the whole row, catching the underside of the stars in six places (center and points) . There's no way those stars are falling off!
