GAUGE: First row + 11 rows = 5 inches (12.7 cm) in Pattern.
BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

I haven't tried the new pattern but will soon. As has been noted, the original was wrong. It took me a few starts to realize that it wasn't something I had done in error. I worked out the correct pattern on my own from the photo.
I made the scarf as a Christmas gift; the recipient loved it! It was a little bigger as I used an H hook, but it was still very nice. It was very easy to do! In spite of its simplicity, those who don't crochet thought it was quite complicated. -)
As I said, I'll try the new pattern soon. After seeing the one I made as a gift, my wife decided she would like me to make one for her. Happy wife - happy life!
