Circumference 18 (20, 21) inches [45.5 (51, 53.5) cm]

Read directions carefully! Small size beret ends after 16 rounds; Medium after 18 rounds; Large after 22 rounds.
Note: Pattern is written for smallest size with changes for larger sizes in parentheses. When only one number is given, it applies to all sizes. To follow pattern more easily, circle all numbers pertaining to your size before beginning.

GAUGE:

16 dc + 12 rows = 4 inches [10 cm].

BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

Beg Puff St

Ch 3, (yo, insert hook in next st, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through 2 loops) 4 times, yo and draw through all 5 loops on hook, ch 1.

Puff St (Yo, insert hook in next st, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through 2 loops) 5 times, yo and draw through all 6 loops on hook, ch 1.

sc2tog (sc decrease) Insert hook into st and draw up a loop. Insert hook into next st and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook.


BERET

Note Join with slip st in first st of each rnd.

Ch 3. Join with slip st to form ring.

Rnd 1 Ch 1, work 6 sc in ring.

Rnd 2 Ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in same st, 2 dc in each st around – 12 dc.

Rnd 3 Ch 3, 2 dc in each st around – 24 dc.

Rnd 4 Ch 3, 2 dc in first st, dc in next st, (2 dc in next st, dc in next st) around – 36 dc.

I agree. It came out bigger than I expected, but maybe my gauge was off. Also, I wanted it large as I used it as a dread tam.
Overall though, it is a pretty and simple pattern.
