GAUGE:

16 stitches = 4 inches [10 cm] in single crochet.

BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

NOTES:

Bag is worked in one piece.

BAG
Chain 4.
Row 1 (right side) Single crochet in 2nd chain from hook and in each chain across, turn – 3 single crochet.
Row 2 Chain 1, 2 single crochet in first single crochet, single crochet in next single crochet, 2 single crochet in last single crochet, turn – 5 single crochet.
Row 3 Chain 1, single crochet in each single crochet across, turn.
Row 4 2 single crochet in first 2 single crochets, single crochet to last 2 single crochets, 2 single crochet in each of last 2 single crochets.
Repeat Rows 3-4 until you have 49 stitches. Mark the first and last stitches. Work even until piece measures 13 inches [33 cm] from beginning. Fasten off.

FINISHING
Fold piece with wrong sides together so ends of last row match stitch markers. Sew right and left side seams together.

Shell stitch edging
With right side facing, attach yarn with chain 1 to base of Bag flap. Single crochet 59 stitches evenly around edges of flap, turn.

Next Row Chain 1, *single crochet in next single crochet, (single crochet, 2 double crochet, single crochet) in next stitch; repeat from * to end of row.
Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Position one part of snap on underside of flap near point and sew in place. Sew remaining part of snap in place on Bag front.

If desired, put decorative pin or button on outside of closure.
