Lion Brand® Watercolors - Fun Fur

GAUGE:

1 shell rep + 4 rows = 4" (10 cm) in Pattern with Watercolors before blocking.
(Blocking will relax pattern somewhat.)
6 sts = 4" (10 cm) in single crochet with double strand of Fun Fur. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

Base Ch/Sc

Note This technique eliminates too-tight base chains that choke up or too-loose ones that sag. It creates a base chain and foundation row of sc at the same time – easy, sturdy and elastic, quite an elegant solution, especially useful for necklines and waistlines.

Begin with a slip knot, chain two, insert hook in second chain from hook, draw up a loop, yarn over, draw through one loop, yarn over and draw through two loops. You have one single crochet with its own chain at the bottom. Work next stitch under loops of that chain. Insert hook under two loops at the bottom of previous stitch, draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through one loop, yarn over and draw through two loops. Repeat for length of foundation.

Shell [dc, ch 1] four times in same ch-space

V-stitch [dc, ch 3, dc] in same sc

NOTES:

Jacket is worked seamlessly, from the neck down in one piece. Four sets of raglan-type increases form a big yoke while maintaining the front neck even. The body fronts and back are joined and worked briefly, at the same time the fronts are decreased for the bolero shaping. Sleeves are worked on later. The jacket is blocked first (see blocking instructions), then finished with Fun Fur.

Pattern is completed over two rows, a right-side row of “shells inches and a wrong-side row of ch-space arches. Follow the row-by-row instructions. Instructions for S/M (L/1X) are the same through Row 9.

FINISHING

Blocking

Watercolors is machine washable, so the wet-blocking method works well. Put Bolero in washer and fill with a couple of inches of cool water. Thoroughly wet Bolero by gently squeezing in water. Spin briefly until just damp. Spread a clean towel or towels on a carpeted floor or on a bed. Lay the damp bolero on the towel(s) and gently ease it into shape, blocking to size, pinning where necessary. Allow to dry completely.

Blocking Measurements (without trim)

Chest at underarm 20 (24)" (jacket does not close at front)

Width at hem 18 (21)"

Length back neck to hem 15 (17)"

Width at upper arm 8 (10)"

Width at cuff 6 (7½)"

Length of sleeve at underarm 9 (11)"

Width at back neck 6 (6)"

Band

Note Fun Fur when worked sc in the round is furrier on the wrong side. Working the band and cuffs with WS facing also helps the band to curve to the inside for a neater finish.

With WS facing, join one strand of each Fun Fur color held together with a slip st to a sc at back hem. Ch 1, sc in same sc and in each sc around entire edge of jacket – 111 (121) sc. Place marker. Work two more rounds of sc, slip st to beg of round. Fasten off.

Cuffs

With WS facing, join one strand of each Fun Fur color held together with a slip st to a sc at underside of sleeve. Ch 1, sc in same sc and in each sc around sleeve – 15 (18) sc.

Place marker, work five more rounds of sc, slip st to beg of round. Fasten off. Make cuff on other sleeve same way.

Weave in ends.

Heavenly Bolero Reviewed by carole on 2009-05-03 *
I bought the materials for this pattern when it was first introduced about 2 years ago (2007). It still is not done, my crochet teacher could not follow the directions, nor could anyone else who was an experienced crocheter. Also, the yarn is difficult to work with, at least in this pattern. Tried asking Lion for help, all I got was "follow the instructions". If I could do that I would not need help. Very poorly written pattern. Am still working on it and have finally found someone who can follow the directions.

This is by no means an "EASY" pattern and should not be classified as such.
