Primary Stripes Child's Hat & Scarf
Lion Brand® Chunky USA
GAUGE: 9 sc + 10 rows = 4" (10 cm). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION: Single Crochet (ch # for desired sts, plus 1)
Row 1 Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across.
Row 2 Ch 1, turn. Skip 1 st, sc across.
Repeat Row 2 for pattern. |
NOTES: Change colors by dropping color in use and picking up next color, carrying colors not in use loosely along side of work.

HATWith A, ch 46. Work 3 rows sc – 45 sts. Work 3 rows B. Change to C and work 3 rows. Repeat last 9 rows. Fasten off. Sew back seam, tucking carried yarn inside the seam. Divide top edge into 3 equal sections; bring centers of 3 sections together at top; and tack in place. Close 3 top seams with overcast st.Tassel For each corner, work as follows: Cut a 12" strand of each color. Thread all 3 through hat at same point; fold strands in half, matching ends; and tie in overhand knot. Divide strands into 3 groups by color and braid to 1" from end. Tie in overhand knot, trim ends.
Scarf With A, ch 16. Work first 9 rows as for Hat, ending with C. Enlarge last loop on hook, remove hook, turn work. Reach in with hook 1 st from the edge where A was left off (6 rows below) and pull up A loop. Continue to slip st along edge (1 st in) to enlarged C loop. With A loop still on hook, insert hook into C loop, pull C yarn to tighten loop. With A, yo and pull through both loops on hook. Work 3 rows in sc. Continue to work stripes of 3 rows sc, dropping and picking up colors as above. Complete 42 stripes. Cut yarns, weave in ends.

| Primary Stripes Child's Hat & Scarf Reviewed by SM Randall-Friday on 2009-02-09 |

I made this scarf for my granddaughter, using multicolored mohair [pink, lavender, white combo], and it turned out lovely. However, I did not think that this hat would suit her, so I downsized the pattern from the Floppy Beret pattern found on this website, and it made a lovely set. My little granddaughter absolutely loved them.
I would also like to add that this pattern was so easy to make, and it only took me a couple of hours to make. I made it one evening this past week while watching my favorite shows on the telly. Of course, when using alternate yarn, it will of course take a bit longer.
