GAUGE:

16 sc + 20 rows = 4" (10 cm).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Heirloom Baby Afghan and Hat and Sweater Set Reviewed by Jody Widner on 2011-03-13 ****
I did find an error with the hat pattern but it was pretty flagrant and an easy thing to correct on the fly. I have finished the afghan and am VERY happy with the way it turned out. Like the other craftsman who posted a photo of her finished product I too had to take some liberties with the afghan border. After conferring with the support team here and fussing with the border for days I finally decided to get as close as I could (can't see the border very well in the illustration). One thing that could help is a close up photo of each section or a hand drawn stitch diagram like they used to use with doily and table cloth patterns. Still working on the sweater and so far it is going very fast - still haven't quite figured out the flowers but that is for another day!
