4 sts = about 4 in. (10 cm) over Rows 1-8. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size
specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be
sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what
the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person.
If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller
size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Making a Gauge Swatch
1. Scarf is worked in intarsia colorwork, using 2 colors on each row.
2. When changing color, pick up new color from under old color to twist yarns and prevent holes from forming in your work.
3. Because yarn is super bulky, you can use your fingers to weave in the yarn ends.
Cast on 4 sts with A, then 4 sts with B for a total of 8 sts cast on.
Row 1: With B, k4, with A, p3, k1.
Rows 2-8: Working A sts with A and B sts with B, k4, p3, k1.
Rows 9-16: Working A sts with A and B sts with B, k1, p3, k4.
Rows 17-32: Rep Rows 1-16, but work A sts with B and B sts with A.
Rep Rows 1-32 five more times (for a total of 6 repeats).
Bind off with matching colors.
With your fingers, weave in yarn ends.
