GAUGE:

15 stitches + 26 rows = about 4 in. (10 cm) in Garter stitch (knit every row).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

NOTES:

1. Bath Rug is worked in one piece in Garter stitch (knit every row) and stripes.
2. A circular needle is used to accommodate the number of sts. Work back and forth in rows on circular needle as if working on straight needles.

BATH RUG
With A, cast on 75 sts.
Work in Garter stitch (knit every row) until piece measures about 3 in. (7.5 cm) from beginning.
Next Row (this row is the right side of the Bath Rug): Change to B and continue in Garter stitch until piece measures about 7 in. (18 cm) from beginning, end with a wrong side row as the last row you work.
Change to A and continue in Garter Stitch until piece measures about 21 in. (53.5 cm) from beginning, end with a wrong side row as the last row you work.
Change to C and continue in Garter stitch until piece measures about 25 in. (63.5 cm) from beginning, end with a wrong side row as the last row you work.
Change to A and continue in Garter Stitch until piece measures about 28 in. (71 cm) from beginning.
Bind off.

FINISHING
Weave in ends.
Cut 3 strands of A, each 5 in. (12.5 cm) long. Hold strands together and fold in half.
Use crochet hook to draw fold through edge along short side of Bath Rug, forming a loop. Pull ends of fringe through this loop. Pull to tighten.
Make fringe evenly spaced along each short end of Bath Rug.
Trim fringe evenly.
