Independence Day Scarf

Lion Brand® Vanna's Glamour®

12 (hdc, ch1) + 15 rows = about 4 in. (10 cm).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

1. Scarf is worked from lower tip up and shaped with increases to create a triangle.
2. Edging is worked around outside edge of Scarf.

Ch 4, hdc in first ch.
Row 1: Ch 4, turn, hdc in first hdc, ch 1, (hdc, ch 1, hdc) in 2nd ch of beg ch – at the end of Row 1 you will have 4 hdc and 3 ch-1 sps.
Row 2: Ch 4, turn, hdc in first hdc, ch 1, *hdc in next hdc, ch 1; rep from * to last st, (hdc, ch 1, hdc) in 2nd ch of beg ch – at the end of Row 2 you will have 6 hdc and 5 ch-1 sps.
Rep Row 2 until you have a total of 78 hdc and 77 ch-1 sps.
Fasten off.

Row 1:
From RS, with lower tip of Scarf at top, join yarn with sl st in one lower corner of Scarf. Ch 1, working towards lower tip, work 73 sc evenly spaced along side edge of Scarf to tip, work 3 sc in tip, then work 73 sc evenly spaced along opposite side edge of Scarf to next corner – 149 sc.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, (sc, ch 6, sc) in first sc, *ch 6, sk 3 sc, sc in next sc; rep from * to end, ch 6, sc in last st again – 37 ch-6 sps.
Rnd 3: Turn, sl st in first 3 ch, ch 6, 3 dc in same ch-sp, *sc in next ch-sp, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-sp; rep from * to last ch-sp, 3 dc in last ch-sp, ch 6, sl st in bottom 3 ch of beg-ch; continuing across straight top edge of Scarf, sc in first st, *ch 6, (sk next ch-1 sp, sk next st) twice, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 6, (sk next st, sk next ch-2 sp) twice, sc in next st; rep from * to last 2 sts, ch 6, sc in last st; join with sl st in first st.

Since the ends are not really long enough to tie. I would just tack them together so that the scarf slips over your head. Even if the ties were long enough to knot, that would be an awfully thick knot at the back of your neck. :)
