Level 1 Knit Cardigan

Lion Brand Lion's Pride Woolspun

GAUGE:

13 sts + 19 rows = about 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS) with larger needles.
13 sts + 26 rows = about 4 in. (10 cm) in Garter st (k every row) with larger needles.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

kfb (knit in front and back) Knit next st without removing it from left needle, then k through back of same st – 1 st increased.
ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog – 1 st decreased.

NOTES:

1. Cardigan is worked in 5 pieces: Back, Left Front, Right Front, and 2 Sleeves.
2. Circular needles are used to accommodate width of fabric. Work back and forth in rows, as if working on straight needles.
3. When you see '0' repeats in an instruction, this means that you should not perform that particular instruction, just skip to the next part of the instruction.
