Level 3 Knit Vest

Lion Brand® Lion's Pride® Woolspun®

GAUGE:

13 sts + 18 rows = about 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

yo (yarn over)
An increase that also creates a small decorative hole (eyelet) in the fabric, worked as follows:
1. Bring yarn to front, between the needles.
2. Take yarn to back, over the right needle. This creates the new st. You are now ready to proceed with the next st as instructed.

NOTES:

1. Vest is worked in one piece.
2. A circular needle is used to accommodate the number of stitches. Work back and forth on the circular needle as if working on straight needles.
3. A stranded colorwork pattern is worked across each Front. The colorwork can be worked by following the written instructions or the chart.
4. If working from chart, work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) and read RS rows of chart from right to left and WS rows from left to right.

STEP 1
Back

With A, cast on 55 (63, 71) sts. Work back and forth in rows, as if working on straight needles.
Row 1 (RS): K1, *p1, k1; rep from * across.
Row 2: P1, *k1, p1; rep from * across.
Rows 3-10: Rep Rows 1 and 2 four more times.
Work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) until piece measures about 11 in. (28 cm) from beg. Place a marker on each end of last row to mark beg of armhole.
Work in St st until piece measures 18 1/2 (19, 19 1/2) in. (47 (48.5, 49.5) cm) from beg, end with a WS row. Note: End with a WS row means that the last row you work should be a WS row, and the next row that you are ready to work will be a RS row.

STEP 2
Cast on for Fronts and Collar
Row 1 (RS):
Cast on 59 (61, 63) sts at beg of row, then knit to end of row – 114 (124, 134) sts.
Row 2: Cast on 59 (61, 63) sts at beg of row, k7, p to last 7 sts, k7 – 173 (185, 197) sts.
Row 3: Knit.
Row 4: K7, p to last 7 sts, k7.
Rows 5 and 6: Rep Rows 3 and 4.
Beg Color Pattern

With A, k7; *with B, k3; with A, k3; rep from * to last 10 sts, with B, k3; with A, k7.

Row 8: With C, k7, with C, p3; *with B, p3; with C, p3; rep from * to last 7 sts; with C, k7.
Cut B.
Continue with C only.
Row 9: Knit.
Row 10: K7, p to last 7 sts, k7.
Rows 11 and 12: Rep Rows 9 and 10.

STEP 3
Work in Garter st (k every row) until piece measures about 8 1/2 (9 3/4, 11) in. (21.5 (25, 28) cm) from cast-on rows, end with a WS row.
Buttonhole Row (RS): K3 (4, 5), k2tog, yo, *k8 (9, 10), k2tog, yo; rep from * 3 more times, k to end of row.
Work in Garter st for 4 rows.
Work in St st for 3 rows, this makes a softly rolled edge.
Bind off.

STEP 4
Measure in 11 in. (28 cm) from edge of front and place marker.
Rep on other side.
Armhole Bands
From RS with A and working across one armhole edge, pick up and k52 (56, 60) sts evenly spaced between armhole markers.
Remove markers.
Rows 1-8: *K1, p1; rep from * across.
Bind off. Rep across other armhole edge.

STEP 5
Fold fronts down, matching Garter st lower edges of fronts with lower edges of back ribbing. Sew side seams, including edges of armhole bands. Sew buttons opposite buttonholes.
