8 sts + 6 rows = about 4 in. (10 cm) over Dash st pattern with larger hook. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size
specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be
sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what
the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person.
If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller
size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Making a Gauge Swatch
rev sc (reverse single crochet) Single crochet worked from left to right (right to left, if left-handed). Insert hook into next stitch to the right (left), under loop on hook, and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through all loops on hook.
Dash St Pattern (worked in rnds over a multiple of 4 sts)
Rnd 1: With A, ch 1, sc in first 2 sts, *bring B to front under A; with A, sc in next 2 sts, bring B to back under A, sc in next 2 sts; rep from * to last 2 sts, bring B to front under A; with A, sc in last 2 sts, bring B to back under A; join with sl st in first sc.
Rnd 2: With A, ch 1, bring B to front under A; with A, sc in first 2 sts, bring B to back under A, with A, sc in next 2 sts, *bring B to front under A, with A, sc in next 2 sts, bring B to back under A, with A, sc in next 2 sts; rep from * around; join with sl st in first sc.
Rep Rnds 1 and 2 for Dash st pattern.
1. Base of Bag is worked first, then body of Bag is worked in rnds.
2. Body of Bag is worked in a Dash st pattern. In this pattern, B yarn is moved from the front to the back of the work to create strands of B across the Bag. After working the first few rnds, pause to 'read' your work. You'll need to understand how the pattern emerges as you work the increased sts into the pattern.
3. Fabric is cut and sewn to make a lining for the Bag. The sewing can be done by hand or machine. The lining is hand sewn into the Bag.
4. Handles are worked separately then sewn to top of Bag.
With A and larger hook, ch 12.
Rnd 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch to last, 3 sc in last ch.
Turn to work across foundation ch, sc in each ch to last ch, 2 sc in last ch; join with sl st in first sc – you will have 24 sc at the end of this rnd.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in first st, sc in each st to center sc of 3-sc group, 3 sc in center sc, sc in each st to last st, 3 sc in last st – 28 sc.
Rnds 3 and 4: Ch 1, sc in first st, *sc in each st to center sc of 3-sc group, 3 sc in center sc; rep from * once more, sc to end; join with sl st in first sc – 36 sc at the end of Rnd 4.
Rnd 5: Sl st in each st around.
Do NOT fasten off.
Increase Rnd: With A, ch 1, working in back loops only, sc in same st, sc in next 2 sc, (2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc) 3 times, 2 sc next sc, sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in last sc; join with sl st in first sc – 44 sts.
Place marker for beg of rnd and place a 2nd marker between the 22nd and 23rd sts for side of Bag.
Move markers up as each rnd is completed.
Rnds 1 and 2: Work Rnds 1 and 2 of Dash st pattern.
Rnd 3 (Inc): Work Rnd 1 of Dash st pattern and increase 2 sts at beg of rnd and 2 sts at side of Bag as follows: work 3 sc in first st, continue in Dash st pattern to marker, slip marker, work 3 sc in next sc, continue in Dash st pattern to end of rnd – 48 sts.
Rnds 4-10: Work in Dash st pattern as established, stranding B across the increased sts to match pattern – in other words, if you've increased just 2 sts, you would move B to back or front of your work, then work the increased sts to match the Dash st pattern.
Rnd 11: Rep Rnd 3 – 52 sts.
Rnds 12-19: Rep Rnds 4-11 – 56 sts at the end of Rnd 19.
Continue in Dash St pattern, without doing any further increasing, until body measures 13 in. (33 cm) from base.
Cut B, continue with A only.
Rnd 1: With A, ch 1, sc in each st around; join with sl st in first sc.
Rnd 2: Sl st in each st around.
Rnd 3: Ch 2, working in back loops only, hdc in each st around; join with sl st in top of beg ch.

Fold Handle lengthwise with WS tog.
With A, sl st edges tog to make a long tube.

With sewing needle and thread, sew ends of Handle to inside of Bag.
Rep to attach second Handle to back of Bag.

Lay Bag on top of folded fabric, then trim along each short side of fabric to match shape of Bag, adding 1/2 in. (1.5 cm) extra for seam allowance. With sewing needle and thread, or sewing machine, seam sides of lining.
From remaining fabric, cut a piece to match the shape of Bag Base, with 1/2 in. (1.5 cm) extra all around for seam allowance.
Sew this piece into the narrow end of the seamed fabric lining.
Along top edge of lining, press 1/2 in. (1.5 cm) to the WS. Slip lining into Bag.
With sewing needle and thread, slip st pressed top edge of lining to WS of Bag.
