Mother's Day Knit Bag

Lion Brand® Wool-Ease® Thick & Quick®

GAUGE:

11 sts = about 4 in. (10 cm) over pattern.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

kfb (knit into front and then back) An increase worked as follows:
1. Knit the next st through the front loop, but do not remove the st from your left hand needle.
2. Knit the same st once more, this time inserting your needle through the back loop of the st. You will have created 2 loops (sts) on your right hand needle.
3. Drop the st from your left hand needle – you have increased 1 st.
Linc (Left increase) Insert tip of left hand needle into st one row below last st worked on right hand needle, lift top of this st and knit it.
Rinc (Right increase) Insert tip of right hand needle into st one row below the next st on left hand needle, left this st onto left hand needle and knit it.
ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog – 1 st decreased.
sk2p (slip-k2tog-pass slipped st over)
A double decrease worked as follows:
1. Insert right needle as if to knit, and slip the next st from the left needle to the right needle.
2. Knit the next 2 sts together.
3. With tip of left needle, lift the slipped st (the 2nd st on right needle) up and over the k2tog (first st on right needle) and off the needle – you have decreased 2 sts.

NOTES:

1. Base and Body of Bag are worked separately, then sewn together.
2. The Body of the Bag is worked in a slip st pattern, stranding the B yarn across. As you work the Body of the Bag, pause to 'read' you work – you'll need to understand how the pattern emerges as you work the increased sts into the pattern.
3. All slipped sts should be slipped as if to purl.
4. Fabric is cut and sewn to make a lining for the Bag. The sewing can be done by hand or machine. The lining is hand sewn into the Bag.
5. Handles are worked separately then sewn to top of Bag.
