Sweets Scarf

Lion Brand® Modern Baby®

20 sts + 28 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Garter st (k every row).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

kfb (knit in front and back) Knit next st without removing it from left needle, then k through back of same st – 1 st increased.
Surface Chain Stitch
Thread needle and bring from back to front through piece. *Hold short length of yarn on front forming a small loop. Insert needle back into where it last came out, do not pull tight. Bring needle back through work and through small loop; repeat from * until chain is desired length.

1. Scarf is worked in Garter st (k every row).
2. Charts are worked in intarsia colorwork. Use a separate ball of yarn for each color section and twist yarns on WS to prevent holes. Do not carry color not in use across WS unless the distance is just a few sts. Before beginning, wind a small amount of A into a separate ball.
3. When working from Charts, work in Garter st, reading RS rows from right to left and WS rows from left to right.
4. When you see “– 12 sts” in the instructions, this lets you know how many sts you will have at the end of that specific row.

With D, cast on 17 sts.
Begin Cupcake Chart
Working in Garter st (k every row), work Rows 1 and 2 of Cupcake Chart.
Inc Row (RS): Following colors on chart, kfb, knit to last st, kfb – 19 sts.
Continue to follow chart and rep Inc Row every other RS row 3 more times – you will have 25 sts after all increases have been completed.
Continue in Garter st and following chart until all 42 rows of chart have been completed.
Work in Garter st with A only until piece measures 34 in. (86.5 cm) from beg, end with a WS row as the last row you work.
Begin Doughnut Chart
Next Row (RS):
Continuing in Garter st, work Row 1 of Doughnut Chart, using the small ball of A for the A area on the far side of the chart.
Continue in Garter st and following chart until all 28 rows of Doughnut Chart have been completed.
Dec Row: Continuing with D only, k1, k2tog, knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1 – 23 sts at the end of this row.
Continuing in Garter st, rep Dec Row every RS row 6 more times – 11 sts rem when all decreases have been completed.
Bind off.

With B, work surface chain st along top edge of cupcake.
With crochet hook and red yarn, ch 20.
Fasten off.
Coil chain into circle and sew to top of cupcake for cherry.
With D, work surface chain st around outer edge of doughnut and doughnut hole. With colors as desired, embroider straight sts randomly on doughnut for sprinkles.
Weave in ends.
