Fishy Wishy Sweater

Lion Brand« Modern Baby«

GAUGE:

20 sts + 28 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS) with larger needles.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

Chain Stitch
Thread needle and bring from back to front through piece. *Hold short length of yarn on front forming a small loop. Insert needle back into where it last came out, do not pull tight. Bring needle back through work and through small loop; repeat from * until chain is desired length.
French Knot
Thread needle and bring from back to front through knitted piece. Wrap yarn around needle 3 times, insert needle back into knitted piece close to where it emerged. Tighten knot.
kfb (knit in front and back) Knit next st without removing it from left needle, then k through back of same st - 1 st increased.
Knitted Cord (on double pointed needles) Working with 2 double pointed needles, cast on specified number of sts. Knit the sts. Do not turn work. *Slide sts to other end of needle and knit them, pulling yarn tightly across the back of the work, (do not turn work); rep from * until cord measures desired length.

PATTERN STITCH
K1, p1 Rib (worked over an even number of sts)
Row 1:
*K1, p1; rep from * to end of row.
Row 2: K the knit sts and p the purl sts.
Rep Row 2 for K1, p1 Rib.

NOTES:

1. Sweater is worked in 4 pieces, Back, Front and 2 Sleeves.
2. Fish and Octopus charts are worked in intarsia colorwork, following charts. Use a separate ball of yarn for each color section. Twist yarns on WS to prevent holes. Do not carry unused color(s) across WS of work.
3. When working from chart, work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) and read RS rows from right to left and WS rows from left to right.
4. Wave Chart is worked in stranded colorwork, carrying unused color across WS of work.
5. When working from Charts, work in St st (k on RS, p on WS), reading RS rows from right to left and WS rows from left to right.
6. End with a WS row means that the last row you work should be a WS row, and the next row that you are ready to work will be a RS row.
7. When you see "– 12 sts" in the instructions, this lets you know how many sts you will have at the end of that specific row.
