GAUGE:

19 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd) with 2 strands of yarn held together.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Seed Banded Slouch Hat Reviewed by Ann Seligman on 2014-12-04 *****
This was a great pattern for my first hat! I try and add new skills with each project, so this time was my first for knitting in the round, double-pointed needles, and two strands of yarn. No problems. I also couldn’t swallow the idea of $85 for wool for a hat that might be a disaster anyway. Instead substituted the LB Superwash Merino, which was lovely to work with and provided a nice texture for a hat, though I can’t say how it will hold up. I knit a lot during meetings, and this was great in that you aren’t always just knitting but don’t have to do complex counting during a round. The picture below does manage to show all the imperfections, but like I said, it was my first hat!
