22 sts + 44 rows = about 4 in. (10 cm) in Garter st (k every row). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size
specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be
sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what
the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person.
If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller
size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Making a Gauge Swatch
1. Hat is worked flat from lower edge to crown (top of Hat), then seamed.
2. When you see ‘work even’ in the instructions, this means to continue on in the pattern st you have established without changing the st count by increasing, decreasing, or binding off.
Cast on 90 (100) sts.
Work in Garter st (k every row) until piece measures 6 (6 1/2) in. (15 (16.5) cm) from beg.

Cut yarn, leaving a 18 in. (45.5 cm) long yarn tail. Thread yarn tail through rem 5 sts and pull to gather. Knot securely.
With yarn tail, sew sides together to make Hat.
Weave in ends.
