True Blue Hat And Mittens

Lion Brand« Homespun«Thick & Quick«

GAUGE:

9 sts + 13 rnds = about 4 in. (10 cm) in St st worked in rnds (k every rnd).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

skp Slip 1 as if to knit, knit 1, pass slip stitch over knit stitch – 1 st decreased.

SPECIAL TECHNIQUES
3-Needle Bind Off

With RS together, hold in one hand 2 needles with an equal number of sts on each. With 3rd needle, knit tog 1 st from each needle, *knit tog 1 st from each needle, pass first st worked over 2nd to bind off; rep from * across. Cut yarn and pull through last st to secure.

NOTES:

1. Hat and Mittens are both worked in the rnd using double pointed needles.
2. When working in the round on double pointed needles (dpns), your sts should be divided fairly evenly onto 4 needles. The total number of sts will not always be evenly divisible by the number of dpns that you are using - this is not a problem! Simply divide your sts as evenly as possible, you will still create a symmetrical 'tube' of knitting.
3. Cuffs for Hat and Mittens are worked first in St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd), then folded and joined to show the purl side on the RS.
4. Hat is then turned inside out and finished in St st.
5. Mitten hand is worked in the rnd in Rev St st (p every rnd) then turned inside out to show the St st on the RS.

HAT
Cast on 48 sts. Divide sts evenly onto 4 needles, with 12 sts on each needle. Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on the left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.
Work in St st work in rnds (k every rnd) until piece measure 9 in. (23 cm) from beg.
Join Cuff
Fold up the cast-on edge to the RS so the cast-on sts are in front of the sts on the needles.
Joining Rnd: *Knit tog 1 cast-on st with 1 st from the needle; rep from * around.
Turn the hat inside out (this is now the RS of the Hat and the joining rnd shows as a ridge on this side). To prevent a hole, sl the last st of rnd to left hand needle, bring yarn between the last st and this st, then return the st to right hand needle. Continue to work from this side.
Knit 3 rnds.
Shape Crown (top of Hat)
Decrease Rnd: On needle 1, skp, k to last 2 sts, skp; on needle 2, k2tog, k to last 2 sts, k2tog; on needle 3, work same as needle 1; on needle 4, work same as needle 2 – 10 sts rem on each needle.
Next Rnd: Knit.
Rep the last 2 rnds 3 more times – 4 sts rem on each needle.
Next Rnd: Rep Decrease Rnd – 2 sts rem on each needle.
Next Rnd: (K2tog) 4 times – 1 st rem on each needle.
Cut yarn, leaving a long yarn tail. Thread tail through rem sts and pull to gather. Knot securely.

MITTENS (make 2)
Cuff
Cast on on 20 sts. Divide sts evenly onto 4 needles, with 5 sts on each needle. Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on the left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.
Work in St st worked in rnds (k every rnd) until piece measures 5 in. (12.5 cm) from beg.
Join Cuff
Work Joining Rnd same as for Hat. Do not turn Mitten inside out.
Work in Rev St st worked in rnds (p every rnd) until piece measures 2 1/2 in. (6.5 cm) from joining rnd.
Thumb Opening
Next Rnd: P3 and sl these sts to a st holder, *insert right hand needle into next st on left hand needle; wrap yarn and pull through (as if knitting a st); sl new st back to left hand needle; rep from * twice, purl to end of rnd – 20 sts at the end of this rnd, plus 3 sts on st holder for thumb.
Continue in Rev St st until piece measures 8 in. (20.5 cm) or 2 in. (5 cm) less than desired length from beg.
Decrease Rnd: On needle 1, p2tog, p to end of needle; on needle 2, p to last 2 sts, p2tog; on needle 3, work same as needle 1; on needle 4, work same as needle 2 – 16 sts.
Next Rnd: Purl.
Rep the last 2 rnds twice more – 8 sts.
Sl sts onto 2 needles, with 4 sts on each needle, and work 3-needle bind off.
Turn Mitten to RS.
Thumb
Sl sts from holder onto a needle. Join yarn, leaving a long yarn tail. K3, pick up and k 5 sts evenly spaced around thumb opening – 8 sts. Divide sts onto 3 needles, with 3 sts on each of 2 needles and 2 sts on the 3rd needle. Place marker for beg of rnd.
Work in St st worked in rnds for 2 1/2 in. (6.5 cm) or to desired length.
Next Rnd: (K2tog) 4 times – 4 sts rem at the end of this rnd.
Cut yarn, leaving a long yarn tail. Thread tail through rem sts and pull to gather. Knot securely.

FINISHING
Use yarn tail at base of thumb to sew closed any gaps that may have occurred when picking up sts for thumb.
Weave in ends.
