Lion Brand« Gold Leaf«

GAUGE:

12 sts + 15 rows = about 4 in. (10 cm) in pattern.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

M1L (make 1 – left slanting) Insert right needle, from back to front, in right leg of st 1 row below first st on left needle, lift the st onto the left needle taking care not to twist it. Knit this st – 1 st increased.
M1R (make 1 – right slanting) Insert left needle, from back to front, in left leg of st 2 rows below first st on right needle and lift st onto left needle. Knit this st through the back loop – 1 st increased.
M1P (make 1 st as if to purl) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal strand lying between the needles and placing it onto the left needle. Purl this new st through the back loop – 1 st increased.
pfb (purl into front and back) Purl next st without removing it from left needle, then p through back of same st – 1 st increased.

NOTES:

1. Cowl is worked back and forth in rows with increases worked on one side edge to form a long, narrow triangle.
2. Bound off edge is sewn to shaped edge to make Cowl.

Cut yarn, leaving a yarn tail about 32 in. (81.5 cm) long. Thread yarn tail into large-eyed blunt needle. Hold needle with rem sts next to marked angled edge at beg of piece. *Insert yarn needle as if to purl through the first 2 sts and draw yarn through, insert yarn needle as if to knit through first st and draw through, slip this first st from needle and sew it to the tip of angled edge; rep from * sewing the rem sts evenly spaced across angled edge from tip of piece to marker until 1 st rem. Fasten off last st and sew to angled edge.
