12 sts + 18 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Garter stitch (k every row). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size
specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be
sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what
the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person.
If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller
size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Making a Gauge Swatch
sk2p Slip 1 as if to knit, knit 2 together, pass slipped stitch over – 2 sts decreased.
4/4 LC (4 over 4 left cross) Slip 4 sts to cable needle and hold in front of work, k4, then k4 from cable needle.
RT (Right Twist) K2tog and leave on left needle, then with right needle, go between the 2 sts and k the first st again.
ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog – 1 st decreased.
3-Needle Bind Off
With RS together, hold in one hand 2 needles with equal number of sts on each. With 3rd needle, knit tog 1 st from each needle, *knit tog 1 st from each needle, pass first st worked over 2nd to bind off; rep from * across. Cut yarn and pull through last st to secure.
1. Brim of Hat is worked in cable pattern, back and forth in rows. Ends of brim are joined by working a 3-Needle Bind Off, then sts are picked up along one edge for the crown (top of Hat).
2. Cable pattern can be worked from the written instructions or by following the chart. When following the chart, work RS rows from right to left and WS rows from left to right.
3. Crown of Hat is worked in the round on double pointed needles.
4. When you see "– 12 sts" in the instructions, this lets you know how many sts you will have at the end of that specific row.
With straight needles, cast on 34 sts.
Following the chart or the written instructions below, work the brim.
Row 1 and all WS Rows: K1, p2, k2, p8, k2, p2, k2, p8, k2, k5 (for Garter st edge).
Rows 2 and 4: K5, p2, k8, p2, RT, p2, k8, p2, RT, p1.
Row 6: K5, p2, 4/4 LC, p2, RT, p2, 4/4 LC, p2, RT, p1.
Rows 8 and 10: K5, p2, k8, p2, RT, p2, k8, p2, RT, p1.
Rep Rows 1-10 until piece measures about 19 in. (48 cm) from beg, end with a Row 10.
Using 3-Needle Bind Off, bind off all sts.
Shape Crown (Top of Hat)
Note: The long side of the brim with the Garter st border is the lower edge.
Rnd 1: From RS, with double pointed needles, pick up and k 48 sts evenly spaced along top long edge of brim. Divide sts onto 4 needles, with 12 sts on each needle. Place marker for beg of rnd.
Join by working the first st on the left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle.
Rnd 2: Knit.
Rnd 3: (K2tog, k20, ssk) twice – 44 sts.
Rnd 4: (K2tog, k18, ssk) twice – 40 sts.
Rnd 5: (K2tog, k16, ssk) twice – 36 sts.
Rnd 6: (K2tog, k14, ssk) twice – 32 sts.
Rnd 7: (K2tog, k12, ssk) twice – 28 sts.
Rnd 8: (K2tog, k3, ssk) 4 times – 20 sts.
Rnd 9: (K2tog, k1, ssk) 4 times – 12 sts.
