12 sts + 18 rounds = 4 in. (10 cm) in pattern.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

sk2p Slip 1 as if to knit, knit 2 together, pass slipped stitch over – 2 sts decreased.

1. Hat is worked in the rnd, beg at lower edge.
2. When knitting in the rnd on double pointed needles (dpns), your sts need to be divided fairly evenly onto 4 needles. The total number of sts will not always be evenly divisible by the number of dpns that you are using – this is not a problem! Simply divide your sts as evenly as possible, you will still create a symmetrical ‘tube’ of knitting.
3. When you see "– 12 sts" in the instructions, this lets you know how many sts you will have at the end of that specific row.

Cast on 56 sts. Divide sts onto 4 needles, with 14 sts on each needle. Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on the left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.
Rnds 1 and 3: Knit.
Rnds 2 and 4: Purl.
Rnds 5 and 6: *K2, p2; rep from * around.
Rnd 7: Purl.
Rep Rnds 5-7 until piece measures 6 in. (15 cm) from beg.
Shape Crown (top of Hat)
Rnd 1 (Dec):
*K2, p2tog, k2, p2; rep from * around – 49 sts at the end of this rnd.
Rnds 2-4: K the knit sts and p the purl sts.
Rnd 5 (Dec): *K2, p1, k2, p2tog; rep from * around – 42 sts.
Rnds 6-8: K the knit sts and p the purl sts.
Rnd 9 (Dec): *K1, sk2p, k1, p1; rep from * around – 28 sts.
Rnds 10-12: K the knit sts and p the purl sts.
Rnd 13 (Dec): *Sk2p, p1; rep from * around – 14 sts.
Rnd 14: K the knit sts and p the purl sts.
Rnd 15 (Dec): *P2tog; rep from * around – 7 sts.
Cut yarn, leaving a long yarn tail. Thread tail through remaining sts and pull to gather. Knot securely.

Weave in ends.

I love this pattern. I used a self- striping wool and it looks really nice. I have made 2 so far
