GAUGE:

10 sts + 18 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in pattern using smaller needles.
8 sts + 16 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in pattern using larger needles.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

kfb (knit in front and back) Knit next st without removing it from left needle, then k through back of same st – 1 st increased.
pfb (purl into front and back) Purl next st without removing it from left needle, then p through back of same st – 1 st increased.

NOTES:

1. Top of Hat begins by working a crochet ring. One round of single crochet is worked, the remainder of Hat is worked in the rnd on double pointed needles.
2. St pattern on Hat alternates rnds of St st worked in rnds (k every rnd) with rnds of rev St st worked in rnds (p every rnd).
3. Smaller needles are used for the Hat to create a dense fabric.
4. Scarf is worked lengthwise back and forth in rows. A circular needle is used to accommodate the large number of sts.
5. When you see "– 12 sts". in the instructions, this lets you know how many sts you will have at the end of that specific row.

HAT
Note:
When changing color on Hat, you don't need to cut the old color, simply carry it loosely up the WS of the Hat. Check the tension of the carried strands every so often as you work to be sure they're neither too loose or too tight.
